Consulting
Experience
Marty Kaplan has more than 30 years of experience helping businesses and organizations remove the internal barriers to their growth and success. He helps his clients build collaborative capacity by addressing their central challenges in a direct and pragmatic manner. Leadership is better able to plan change, simplify work, and improve teamwork. Employees work effectively together to build shared visions, create common understandings and work through strong differences of opinion. By partnering with his clients to think clearly about the issues at hand, Marty helps them determine what conversations need to occur, and how to create the conditions where people can be at their personal best while having those conversations.
He specializes in helping people forge productive work relationships, and his practice is evenly divided between opportunity-rich start up projects and messes (relationships gone bad). His niche is broad, and his practice spans individual, team, departmental, inter-departmental, organizational, and inter-organizational levels.
He's had particular success at building collaborative capacity in the construction industry, where failures to work well together result in enormous amounts of money wasted in direct costs associated with conflicts between owners, builders and designers. His approach to "partnering" is uniquely responsive to the needs and requirements of his clients.
Marty is an expert coach, thought-partner and facilitator, helping groups of all sizes have lively and engaging conversations that lead to breakthroughs in learning and performance. Clients report that his organizational expertise, directness, clarity, enthusiasm and sense of humor help them move from thought to action.
Clients have access to a ground-breaking Team Effectiveness Toolbox Marty developed to help team leaders improve the performance of their work groups without the use of a consultant.
A partial list of his clients includes UC Berkeley, Kaiser Permanente, the City of San Jose Redevelopment Agency, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Xerox Corporation, Digital Equipment Corporation, the US Army, the Marine Corps, and Dance Magazine.
His leadership and training expertise also finds expression through his passion for bicycling. An accomplished ultra-distance bicyclist, Marty coaches riders at all levels who want to "go the distance" and break through to their personal best.
Marty has a Ph.D. in Organization Behavior from Case Western Reserve University, and holds memberships in the Organization Development Network and the American Psychological Association..
